Cheerleading Competition 2008

We are excited to announce the Columbus County Agricultural Fair will continue the Cheerleading Competition for Varsity and Junior Varsity squads this year!  Invitations are extended to all schools in Columbus, New Hanover and Brunswick counties.  The location for the competition is the Demolition Derby field and the competition area will be prepared appropriately for that night.  The following criteria will apply to this competition:

  1. Varsity and Junior Varsity squads will be judged in different categories.  There is no category for mixed Varsity and Junior Varsity so there no “mixed” squads allowed for competition.

  1. Each team will have a maximum of 3 minutes to execute their routines.  Any program that exceeds 3 minutes will be penalized five (5) points per judge.
    1. Timing will begin with the first music, voice or movement of the squad.
    2. A sound system will be provided for this event but each team is responsible for having a person on sight to play their music.  Music can be recorded on a cassette or a CD.  There is no limit on the amount of music allowed in the routine.

  1. Presentations may include dances, stunts, tumbling, cheers or chants.  However, each squad must include at least one cheer and/or chant in their presentation.

  1. Each presentation must comply with the NCCCA Cheerleading Guidelines.

  1. All participants in the competition must be on the official conference eligibility roster for the school. Rosters must reflect cheerleaders who are on the eligibility roster for your school and that cheer on that squad on a weekly basis.

  1. If the presentation is interrupted because of failure of equipment, the team affected will be allowed to present their routine from the place where the interruption occurred or from a point determined to be fair by the judges.

  1. All participants and advisors should remember to display good sportsmanship throughout this event.

  1. Each school is asked to create a 4 X 6 banner to be placed on the fence around the competition area.  This banner should be a representation of the school including School Name and School colors.  This banner should be delivered to the fair no later than Tuesday 2:00 pm.  Only one banner is required from each school even though both Varsity and Junior Varsity may be competing.

  1. In the event of extreme rain or wet conditions, the cheerleading competition will be cancelled.

  1. An official cheerleading roster will need to be mailed to Jenny Herring as soon as possible.  Also, liability waivers must be completed for each cheerleader who is competing.  A copy of these roster and waiver forms will be faxed to the schools with the original information packets.  Rosters and waiver forms are also available on the fair website.  As cheerleaders enter the gates, they must be in uniform and their name must be checked off on the roster.  Coaches from each squad will also be admitted without charge.  All other personnel will need a gate ticket.

  1. Prizes will be awarded as follows:

Participation Awards:  $50 per squad

1st place:  $200

2nd place:  $100

3rd place:  $ 50

There will be a “moving” trophy to be placed in the School with the highest score in the Varsity and Junior Varsity Divisions.  This trophy will be returned to the fair each year for placement in the current fair winner’s school.

PLEASE NOTE:  Please see Rhonda Thompson before leaving the competition and pick up all prize money at that time.  No prize money will be mailed to the schools.
